scientist, had a passion for drawing. Vladimir recalls how he used to sit on his father's lap fi nishing his drawings. Vladimir attended art school at the age of seven, along with his elementary school studies. He used to do his homework while riding the subway to the special school. By the time he was 17, he had entered the esteemed Moscow Art Institute. His formal training was rather classical, but eventually his talent as "Metaphorical Realism." Maui's Front Street Gallery in Lahaina is Vladimir Kush's fi rst and largest artist-owned gallery. Maui is special to the artist, and he spends most of the year working from his home on the island. The rest of his time is spent traveling extensively. He is always looking for "proofs" of his ideas in different part of the world. Many months and sometimes years go into the thought process that eventually manifests itself into a new painting. at least one carefully thought out visual metaphor or double meaning. The metaphors often refer to a myth, or scientifi c thought, or even a work of literature. The viewer is invited to contemplate old metaphors in new ways and make previously unexplored connections. The books contain poems and text, inspired by the paintings and written by the artist's uncle and father Michael Kush and Oleg Kush. These men had an important infl uence on the artist's life.
